Journey

At the Hollywood & Highland complex in the heart of Hollywood, the ground is inlaid with dozens of anonymous 'how I made it' quotes from film industry folks both past and present. Here I have highlighted 4 from the Golden Age of Hollywood that tell of their defining moment on their journey to success! The first is from Paramount's star designer, Edith Head. I've read some books on her and found that although she was ambitious enough to pull this stunt, she also knew she had the talent to back it up. Sometimes a gal's gotta do what a gal's gotta do!

Love that Edith Head quote...she certainly was one of the only one to have balls like that. She also quite happily took credit for a lot of the costumes the Givency designed for Audrey Hepburn. Being the gentleman he was, he didn't say anything about it for years. She was always happy to take credit from someone else. Fascinating woman though.

Love that "hatcheck girl" anecdote. True story: many decades ago when I still had my looks and my figure, I was in the Duchin Lounge in the Sun Valley Lodge in Sun Valley Idaho with my (now late) husband (a looker himself!). He went to talk with a ski buddy and you know what sometimes happens with an apparently (however briefly) unescorted woman in a bar especially in such a glamorous locale: I was approached by a deeply tanned, slender and gorgeous man who - honest - told me I should "be in the movies." I just laughed and made sure my well-adorned ring finger was on display. He introduced himself and at that time I didn't recognize the name but I introduced myself and mentioned my husband would be back shortly....later, at a cocktail party given by mutual friends I was introduced again - to Darryl Zanuck. Embarrassed, tickled, an amazing array of emotions competed in my brain at that point. That's the best of my four and only four celebrity stories!
