While fur had always been either a true necessity in frigid climates or a luxury (think ermine robes for royalty and the extravagant fur-lined pelisse and enormous muffs and hats of the 1700's, 1800's and 1900's)the elegant understatement of fur as trimming I think might have been started by Chanel, maybe 1920s? What do you think, Katie? And thanks for posting all of these wonderful photos.

Hey there--- you know, I'm not sure! I would assume fur trims go way back, but I know Chanel would have probably made it main stream. I should add some historical fashion references to the blog roll!
