Ciro's

The place to be in the 40's and 50's was Ciro's. Opened in 1940 on the famed Sunset Strip, it saw major movie players, mobsters, crooners, politicians and of course, the press! Chic, elegant and dashing, aren't they? This kind of insight would never happen in this day and age. Today, The Comedy Store at 8433 Sunset Boulevard stands on Ciro's ghostly hallowed grounds. This month marks Old Hollywood Glamour's 6th year! I've updated a bit and added some great sites to the blog roll. Wives With Beehives is a special airing tonight on TLC and chronicles 4 colorful women and the vintage lives they lead!  I found out about this from my new favorite blog, Dollie DeVille's The Rockabilly Socialite. She is one of the 4 stars profiled. It looks cute and entertaining, and their homes are filled with retro trimmings and post-war attitude.  I've never seen a docu-reality show based on the vintage lifestyle before. It looks like it's only one special. Will you watch? Stay tuned!  It airs on TLC 10pm EST.

Guideline

NYC artist Jason Bryant has created a fascinating series wherein his admiration of classic films are fused with more modern imagery such as skateboarding graphics.

Here are a few iconic pieces...can you recognize your favorite Old Hollywood Stars? Interesting to note that many of the subjects are in a state of vulnerability. Do you view the graphics as graffiti of some sort? Is it just a matter of two ideas that appeal to him or wanting to create a more vitriolic response from the viewer? Regardless of your views, this is a passionate collection that is clearly meant to merge two pop culture heavy weights: Classic film, from which we take from to this day; film themes, costume, standard of living, and underground turned mainstream skateboarding; something that has evolved not only to a successful sport and way of living, but an art unto itself. The act of boarding being one aspect, the creating of your own brand, logo and advertising being the other.

NYC gallery porter / contemporary is currently exhibiting Smoke and Mirrors Paintings by Jason Bryant which runs September 6 – October 20, 2012. If you are in the NYC area, please check it out!
