Jean at Rest

Here is Jean Harlow on the set of Dinner at Eight utilizing a leaning board. If an actress' (or actor's) costume was too elaborate, a leaning board was built for the person to lean or rest as not to muss their wardrobe. In Jean's case, she was sewn into her gown.

UPDATE 6-5-09
I just found this picture of Rita on a leaning board!

I love these pictures of Jean Harlow! Wouldn't it be awesome to have a leaning board at home? I know I want one.

Great photos! Sewn into the dress?! Amazing. And I'd never heard of a leaning board before. That is too funny.
Thanks for sharing!

I had never heard of a leaning board either. Sewn into her dress? Wow, what problems that could cause on a bad day but, boy does she look yummy.

Am watching "It Happened One Night" and thought I'd look up "leaning board" and "Jean Harlow" on Google and ran across your blog. Nice to see someone out there remembered this bit of trivia...and gave it a mention.

I think this leaning board concept is great and though I've seen the Harlow photo's before, I haven't been as lucky with the Rita Hayworth one. Thank you so much for sharing.
